VCA Arboretum View Animal Hospital has a great opportunity available for a board certified/residency trained Veterinary Surgeon to join our fast-paced, AAHA-accredited, 24-hour emergency/specialty referral/general practice in Downers Grove, Illinoisâ€"located in an affluent part of the Chicagoland area.

Our accomplished team includes an Internist, a Criticalist, a Neurologist, an Oncologist, a Surgeon, an Alternative Medicine specialist, and a Behaviorist.

Our well-equipped, 14,000 sq. ft. facility features digital radiography, on-site MRI, in-house CT, three surgical suites, full in-house lab, blood bank, endoscopy, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, a gamma camera suite, and an underwater treadmill.

The Surgery Specialist â€"under the guidance of the Medical Director and with the support of the Regional Medical Directorâ€"carries out VCA’s promise to our clients: making their pet’s health our top priority and excellent service our goal. The Surgeon educates clients and referring veterinarians on, advocates for and strives to deliver the highest quality medical, surgical, dental and nutritional diagnostics, treatment, and preventative care to companion animals.

Skills and Qualifications

A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, or equivalent, from an accredited university.

Residency training with board eligibility or certification in specialty.

Licensure in good standing to practice in the state in which applicant is to be employed.

Professional comportment and appearance, with excellent interpersonal skills and a positive, friendly attitude.

The ability to make decisions and communicate clearly and effectively with fellow team members.

Respect for and willingness to work with clients and their pets.

A commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine, upholding the veterinary code of ethics.

Job Responsibilities

Develop a rapport with clients and determine their needs and wishes; perform physical examinations and diagnostic/medical/surgical/dental procedures in a way that will deliver the highest quality care while minimizing patient stress and discomfort; recommend referral to or consultation with other VCA specialists when this is likely to significantly improve the diagnostic and therapeutic approach and service to the client.

Explain physical examination findings and communicate to the client a diagnosis of the pet’s problems; generate and present a treatment plan for the pet to the client; educate clients on preventative health care, including vaccines and appropriate nutritional products; timely follow-up communication of the same information to the primary care veterinarian for further implementation.

Maintain client/patient medical/surgical records and make certain all necessary logs are kept up-to-date through established protocols; assist colleagues in follow-up and future management of the patient.

Establish a good rapport with referring veterinarians, including: timely professional and respectful communication; assistance in their professional growth and education through recommendations and interaction on referred and shared cases; ongoing development of a positive and professional working relationship; participation in Continuing Education involving the local referral community.

Assist in the development and training of the paraprofessional team to ensure the delivery of the highest quality care and exceptional client service.

Assist with marketing the services of the specialty practice through a variety of outreach programs, some of which include: making hospital visits to referring veterinarians, assisting with local CE meetings, answering all calls from referring veterinarians promptly, helping with production of hospital newsletters and case reports.

Assist with the training of any interns and residents, under the guidance of the Medical Director, if these programs are in place at the practice.

Stay up-to-date with new medical information and changes in veterinary medicine, fulfill VCA requirements for attending local VCA Continuing Education meetings and complete at least 30 hours of accredited CE per year.

Positively represent the hospital and VCA in the professional community and to the general public.
